Aristotelismo vs. platonismo
Aristotelianism, Platonism and Artificial Intelligence (Spanish below)
One of the themes hinted at in my last novel, “Waters of the Kalahari”, refers to the two ways of seeing, or interpreting, reality: the purely logical /materialistic which dominates scientific thinking and is based on known physical laws, and the intuitive /transcendental way of seeing, which accepts the idea of a nontangible dimension of reality. This dichotomy has been referred to, in some scholastic arenas, Aristotelian vs. Platonism. Plato suggested that the reality we perceive with our senses is an illusion and, in his famous allegory of the cave, men imprisoned there see nothing but the shadows of other men and objects projected on the walls of the cave in front of them. Aristotle begins the process of elimination of all “esoteric and mystical” traces of Platonism, accepting as true only that which can be explained by observation and proclaiming the intellect as the supreme authority. The 50th anniversary of the first publication of the “The Sufis” by Idries Shah.
(English below)

Continue reading

What’s Lost as Handwriting Fades- Lo que se pierde al abandonar la escritura a mano
VERSIÓN EN ESPAÑOL ABAJO
I would like to refer my readers to an important article regarding the learning process: “What’s Lost as Handwriting Fades” by Maria Konnnikova. It’s from the Science Times section of the New York Times, June 3rd, 2014:
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/03/science/whats-lost-as-handwriting-fades.html?_r=0
Through her readings in psychology as well as neurological studies, Konnikova learned that memory and motor skills may suffer as a consequence of a shift from handwriting to the keyboard. The links between handwriting and learning run deep. Continue reading

Chevron, bad news
Nothing more certain than that money is power! Bad news for those affected by the ecological disaster in the Ecuadorian Amazon. A federal court in the United States ruled the judgement against Chevron invalid. This makes if more improbable that the company will pay the 19 billion dollars it owes, which would have been used, in the main, to decontaminate the half million hectares with 30,000 people afflicted with cancer and other diseases. In a video posted in Facebook (Rita Wirkala or Elwin Wirkala, https://www.facebook.com/rita.wirkala), which we took during our last visit to the Amazon, Elwin walks in an undulating mass of fern floating over one of the 960 unlined oil pools left by Texaco some 40 years ago. Still, toxic killing…..

El Tren de las Moscas
Thank you Mujeres of the NW for the documentary, “Tren de las Moscas”
I do not remember ever seeing a documentary more touching than this one, shot with few resources and great sensitivity by Nieves Prieto Tassie and Fernando López Castillo. This film choice – presented at our last meeting of Mujeres, on February 12th – could not have been more appropriate.
In general, political documentaries can outrage, infuriate or, in the worst cases, bore me. This one, however, filled my eyes with tears. It is about an unusual group of women from Amatlán (Veracruz, Mexico ) who daily prepare bottles of water and bags of food to throw to the “flies” (moscas). Continue reading

Continue reading
